dare

This one time, i almost got crucified because of a dare

We were sitting outside the uni, waiting for class.. pehla pehla semester, naye naye dost saaray.  Passing the time, thought of playing truth or dare.

I got to have two turns, the first was mine and i chose dare. My dare? Propose to my project partner! Man! that was hilarious! Picture this…

Got up in the middle of the group, took her by the hand, went down on my knees, looked in her eyes and said…

“will you be my partner?”

LoL! The hue and cry which  went up was amazing :p the dramatics and gussa i had to suffer for the next two weeks wasn’t that much (the crucification part).

The next dare, give to a relatively new female friend, slap one guy in the class! Lo & behold, i was the only male friend she had in class… and it came onto me to receive it. Once again, i’m standing in the center of the circle, with another girl but thankfully she cant bring her hand quite upto my face. Then it happened.. the girl i proposed to was good friends with her! After we’re standing in the middle for a minute not doing anything, she stands up, grabs her hand and places a resounding slap across my face! I was too stunned to even recoil!

And so began.. the dare consequences…..

dinner and a movie!

and here i thought it wasn’t possible in Karachi!

Ever since the cineplex opened up at Seaview, all i’ve heard are bad things about it. The screen is too small, the decor is tacky, the movie quality is not good, the seats are uncomfortable etc etc etc. Little did i realize then….. these were the nitpickings of those comparing it with foreign cinemas.

I went with a different mindset, comparing it with the staple of movie goers in karachi.. Capri, Prince and Nishat. And what i discovered amazed me! The first thing you notice is how different the place is outfitted. Marble floorings, leather couches, and the fetish for bond movies! Oh, and ofcourse.. the overpriced food items.

Even though the theater was small, it was large enough to seat almost a hundred people (give or take). The movie playing that day was “Holiday” starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, given the fact that i am a guy, i dont really remember who the male actors were apart from they were leads in the movie Alfie, and School of Rock.. but cameron diaz really… really prevented me from looking anywhere else.

Another thing you notice which is different from the other cinemas, mostly due to a different crowd (more defence and more girls), is no boo-ing or cheering during the ‘intimate’ scenes. They censor the really hardcore stuff (as they should), but what they let go atleast didn’t incite the same frustrated  response found in other cinemas which made the whole movie experience worthwhile.

After the movie, we went to have dinner and sheesha at Creek Inn. A little chilli, and a little too crowded on a saturday night, but overall had fun. Again, the best part of the place was no ‘mela crowd’ hanging around, since that place is *ssssoooo* far away.

Not bad right?!

Now maybe next time i can go without my cousins…. hhhmm.. anyone up for a movie?

i do remember…

… the flower TCS’ed to you the first time
… the boquet sent to you anonymously, and the next one
… the purple dress on your birthday when you thought people didn’t even remember
… the short pink shirt on the very fist time
… the maroon, even when it went against everything you stood for
… the laughs on whatever i said (even when sometimes wasn’t funny)
… the categorical destruction you dealth me with your wit (which i usually enjoyed! you were a worthy opponent)
… panera’s
… daal fry and sheermal for lunch at the dhaba
… the touch when you were feeling cold
… the way your breathing would change, ever so subtly
… the scent of your hair i loved to inhale when you wouldn’t know
… the trying really hard to be everything i wanted, even when what i wanted changed more frequently than designs in a kaliedoscope
… the sandwich i had almost everyday
… the fetish with chilli sauce
… the concern you showed even when i just wanted to be alone

Im sorry it couldn’t work out, im sorry i dont want to make it work anymore, and even though i said i just remember the bad… i lied. I remember all you did for me, all you were for me… and more.

Just another one of the (frequent?) trips down memory lane….I promise there will be a much livelier post next

Cooco’s Den - Lahore

“between the debased and the devine” reads the last line of the introduction of Cooco’s den in its menu card. Most of us know about this amazing place, many including PsycheD and oream have even written on it but I still feel that this place deserves another post.

Located in lahore’s famous red light area, heera mundi (diamond district), this restaurant was the brain child of Iqbal Hussain, a painter, art teacher and the son of a dancer who worked this area in the past.

When psyched had mentioned this place on her blog, it had piqued my curiosity. I really wanted to see what/where this place was. I called her up to ask about it, and was kind enough to warn me going without a booking was not a good idea before giving me a number to call. If you’re reading this girl.. I owe you one!

Before leaving, we were asked by the hotel management to return early from there, as it was ‘not a good area’. As expected, we heard his advice in one ear, n promptly forgot it.
I met my friend at the restaurant after a hair raising ride in a rickshaw. Hair raising because i dont drive that safe myself, otherwise it was downright terrifying! Normal on the streets of lahore they tell me *shudder*

Thanks to informing early, we got a table right on top of the place, which was also pretty much exclusive (love u PsycheD!!!). we got a sprawling view of the shahi masjid and the qilla gate. However, there was one problem.. Due to recent rains, the lights were off! But we didn’t let that dampen our moods. A little on the restaurant itself, it houses a gallery on the ground floor, containing works of the owner.

He has tried to (n been successful) capture the essence of life in the district during his childhood. The pictures all feature women in different settings, some ready to work, some in provocative poses, and some just doing what women do, hanging out and talking. The gallery also has antiques from the same time i believe, and the combination does bring about a magical effect, transforming you back to a time when this was their world, and either you were a paying customer or unwelcome. (taking in the gallery after having food does the wonders, looking at it on an empty stomach will not do the trick). The architecture of the haveli in which the restaurant is built also adds credence to the image conjured up from the gallery. Heavily influenced by Hinduism, with gods and goddesses present, the place merges other religions such as Christianity, Sikh and Islam as well. (Click on the picture or here to view more images of Cooco’s Gallery)

We had tawa chicken, mutton handi and daal for dinner. It was, in one word, delicious!! Overate till i almost burst (didn’t cuz the food finished first)! Amazing!

We were just about to leave, when found out there was a surprise in store for us. Just a little before midnight, one by one, the lights all around the place came on!! It was breathtaking!! i just sat there, mesmerized in the beauty of the sight before me! that, combined with the soft love music serving as the background made the whole experience complete! We finally moved from there closer to one (after arriving at nine thirty).

The night was made complete with a late night stroll along the old city taking in the sights and sounds of the place before finally catching a ride back home at three am.

god works in mysterious ways

I

‘how could she do this to me? How could she cheat on me?? I gave her everything she wanted!’ he thought as he stepped off the curb..

The last thing he saw before the darkness engulfed were the tail lights of the car careening away

II

‘thankgod for the weekend..’ he thought pressing the pedal to get home faster. His wife was waiting with dinner.. And he wasn’t going to miss it this time.

when he saw him, it was too late! Get back Get Back!! He tried to yell.. Then the pain shot up his left arm.

III

‘what are we going to do?’ she sobbed on the phone. ‘he knows about us..’ he tried consoling her.. Knowing it wouldn’t do any good. ‘He’s going to kill us! Oh God save me!!!’ she prayed silently as there was a beep in the line. ‘he’s calling, wait’..

A female voice asked.. ‘is this mrs rehman?’

another in the new 55fiction series.. still trying to get my head around it… still thanking xill for inspiration.

dhol

I’ve recently realized i love the sound of the dhol!

I know, very desi of me (considering i like women’s feet, their eyes and now this, the only thing missing is daal.. hhhmm..)

This revelation came upon me by way of a song Mahi Ve sung by Josh. Now the original doesn’t have a lot of dhol in it, but then.. there’s the RDB remix!  It makes the whole song become something of an experience within itself! I listen to it in the car at full volume (with the windows rolled up mind u! im a responsible citizen afterall) and now in my office! Which reminds me.. these new headphones are great! (hats off to the chineese for making such wonderfully cheap ones! i know, they last only a couple of months, but by then, i can get new ones and praise the koreans or vietnamese for them).

Coming back to the song and the dhol, there are three places where the dhol really reverberates through you. Mixed in with the desi version of the violin and building it up to a crescendo makes you happy, excited and all spent at the same time! The lyrics, punjabi and hence required quite a bit of translation, are quite sufistic, which make this song unique in yet another aspect.

For those who have not yet sampled this wonderful conoctation for the soul, i pity you poor souls!

And i seriously suggest you get ur self a copy of the song. (Download it from here).

p.s.
This blog (and the author too) does not condone piracy. Buy the album if you like the song. Support the industry and the poor starving artists! Also, since i have bought the album i feel comfortable saying this :D

p.p.s
The spellchecker which comes with wordpress does not support the word “blog”! I object!

story

“My grandma used to spin the most fantastic of stories you’ve ever heard!” she said to her companion

“You’re wrong! My grandma was better! It was fairies and princes always” came the reply

The two sisters sat silently remembering… till they heard the excited voices..

“Bari dadi, choti dadi! tell us a story please na”

My very first try at a 55fiction, inspired by Xill-e-Ilahi. Also part of the wednesday wanderers.

the perfect match

is someone who needs to be pampered with someone who needs to pamper.

How much would you agree with that? Personally, i believe that maybe that was the reason many relationships of the past survived the test of time, and why many relationships now dont.

Womens lib, feminism, egoistic attitudes and political correctness have all but destroyed the delicate balance between pampering your loved one and being pampered.  To a lot of people, even acknowledging this fact hints weakness, when in-fact, it is the dismissal of the fact itself which i believe to be the biggest weakness of them all.

How many ‘puppy love’ stories have you seen around you, in the movies  or read in books where gifts, sweet nothings and outrageous displays of emotion have joined two people together in a stronger that love itself? Before you dismiss it as fiction or luck, think about it. It is the basic need, the ultimate want of the human spirit, yet in the name of independent thinking, we let go of it and much rather prefer feeling lonely…..

To all feminists i say, you wield the ultimate power! In the words of Xill-e-Ilahi

“the almighty has yet to create a female form without the capability to bewitch males with her eye”
