Allah o Akbar

“Stress to Success… looks good” he reached out to pick up the book in the used book shop.
“ALLAH HO AKBAR!!!!” a voice boomed, he turned around just long enough to notice the blurred figure.

“Suicide bombers attacked a small used book shop in Islamabad tonight killing 3 and….” Reported the news caster just moments after.

If only it was completely fiction and not almost true. Obviously the last line never happened, since im here narrating the story, but i cant begin to even imagine what would’ve happened had the figure who appeared in the doorway actually been serious. It was apparently a prank, pulled by youngsters living in Islamabad, or a dare, i dont know.

I have never, repeat, never heard anything so terrifying in all my life! Even though it happened even before i had a chance to register what was going on. Its an hour later, and the sound is still echoing in my ears…

To all who have been affected by suicide bombings, i cant even begin to imagine what you have gone through, to everybody else living in this country, please be safe.

the assignment

“trust me, it’s better this way”

“really? Are you sure about that?”

“yes, I’m positive…”

She walked away, knowing it was no use trying to convince him anymore…

It was due in the morning and they were still bickering about the contents. It was going to be a long night ahead.

Then think about marriage?” she replied knowing the motherly way that his crush would bring her down.. “trust me, when you meet her.. u’ll just walk upto her, say hi and it will be like magic”

“My parents are really serious about getting me hitched you know. They’ve got rishtas lined up all over the place” she said to her best friend. He just nodded and smiled… thinking of the possibilities that never were to be.. “There’s this one guy, he’s a surgeon! Just think! All the money and none of the husband! haha! And this other one is a…” she droned on..

III

“I have to use the rest room” he interrupted her.. he had to get away.. the thoughts were overwhelming.. he was about to let her get away.. she was his happiness yet she’ll be with someone else… he started running towards to restroom, just as he rounded the corner he bumped into her and notes scattered everywhere.. the perfect movie moment.. he bent down to help her.. “hey hi! sorry about this..” she smiled.. and it was like magic!

the promise

I

“You want me to do what!! but you’re almost like family!” she cried incredulously at his suggestion… Thinking back, this was what she wanted… he was who she wanted. Now was the time… she had to tell her father she wanted to marry his best friend’s son…
II

“she’s turning 25, already graduated, and at the prime of her beauty. It’s time we got her married off u know” she said to her husband about their eldest daughter. “uh huh” he grunted… not knowing how to tell his wife of the promise he’d made earlier…

III

“promise me! promise me you’ll treat my family as your own after i’m gone!” he pleaded to his best friend on his deathbed.. the cancer had come out of the blue and he knew he’d soon be gone. “I will. I’ll take care of them. One day, we’ll be one family!” he promised…

god works in mysterious ways

I

‘how could she do this to me? How could she cheat on me?? I gave her everything she wanted!’ he thought as he stepped off the curb..

The last thing he saw before the darkness engulfed were the tail lights of the car careening away

II

‘thankgod for the weekend..’ he thought pressing the pedal to get home faster. His wife was waiting with dinner.. And he wasn’t going to miss it this time.

when he saw him, it was too late! Get back Get Back!! He tried to yell.. Then the pain shot up his left arm.

III

‘what are we going to do?’ she sobbed on the phone. ‘he knows about us..’ he tried consoling her.. Knowing it wouldn’t do any good. ‘He’s going to kill us! Oh God save me!!!’ she prayed silently as there was a beep in the line. ‘he’s calling, wait’..

A female voice asked.. ‘is this mrs rehman?’

another in the new 55fiction series.. still trying to get my head around it… still thanking xill for inspiration.

story

“My grandma used to spin the most fantastic of stories you’ve ever heard!” she said to her companion

“You’re wrong! My grandma was better! It was fairies and princes always” came the reply

The two sisters sat silently remembering… till they heard the excited voices..

“Bari dadi, choti dadi! tell us a story please na”

My very first try at a 55fiction, inspired by Xill-e-Ilahi. Also part of the wednesday wanderers.
